Mama June Shannon is currently fighting for custody of her granddaughter, Caitlyn Shannon. When her daughter, Anna Cardwell, was diagnosed with Stage 4 adrenal carcinoma, she had to make some major decisions. Anna had two daughters, Kaitlyn and Kylie. Kylie’s father, Michael Cardwell, would get custody if she passed. Sadly, Caitlyn’s biological father was never identified, so Anna had to name a guardian. She wanted her second husband, Eldrid Tony, to have custody, but June felt she could give Kaitlyn a better life. Nothing was filed, so June and her husband, Justin, took over. Michael then filed for custody, claiming he had a great relationship with Caitlyn and paid for her expenses. Now they are in court, and June has already gotten a small win.

According to In Touch Weekly, the court signed off to get records from DCFS (Department of Family and Children Services) per Mama June’s request, stating that the evidence is crucial for the court to make an informed decision regarding Caitlyn’s best interest. June has alleged that Michael was abusive toward Anna during their time together, stating it would not be in Caitlyn’s best interests to be in Michael’s care. This comes after Michael claimed Anna and June had a strained relationship. Anna had been open about her mother’s false promises and betrayal, even suing her and TLC for non-payment of $300,000 worth of earnings from Here Comes Honey Boo Boo.
Getting those records was a small win for Mama June. She will also be turning over her drug test reports since early 2023 to address questions about her sobriety. Caitlyn has filed a declaration stating she wants to stay with her grandmother. Some dispute if she actually wrote this, but Caitlyn expressed she wants to speak to the judge. “I also wish to speak to the judge to inform the court of my wishes.” If Caitlyn gets that opportunity, it could change the battle’s direction or the records could seal the deal.
Michael has denied any wrongdoing, stating this is the first time these allegations have been made against him. He and Anna had a great relationship and simply separated due to differences in opinions and personalities.
